1. Unopened dried tofu skin
Unopened dried tofu skin usually comes in sealed packaging and only needs protection from environmental influences. It can be stored in two ways:
Room-temperature storage:
Place the unopened package in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Keep it away from sinks, stoves, and other damp or high-temperature locations, and avoid direct sunlight.
Long-term storage:
To extend the shelf life, you can put the unopened package directly into the refrigerator. The low-temperature environment slows down aging and helps maintain texture.
2. Opened dried tofu skin
Once opened, dried tofu skin easily absorbs moisture from the air, so proper sealing is essential. Follow these steps:
Seal promptly:
After each use, place the remaining tofu skin in an airtight container. A storage box with a silicone sealing ring or a thick zip-lock bag with the air pressed out is recommended.
Moisture control:
Place 1–2 packets of food-grade desiccant inside the container to absorb residual moisture.
Storage location:
Short term: Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place.
Long term: Keep it in the refrigerator, making sure it is not stored with strong-smelling foods.
Tips & Precautions
Check before use: Inspect the dried tofu skin before eating. If you notice clumping, dampness, or mold, it has spoiled and should not be consumed.
Avoid repeated exposure: Take out only the amount needed each time to minimize the number of times the package is opened and reduce contact with air and moisture.
Freezing not recommended: Since dried tofu skin has very low moisture content, freezing and thawing can make it even drier and tougher, negatively affecting its texture during cooking.
