Three kinds you must not buy
Overly bright color
While good-quality fuzhu looks appealing and has a natural sheen, an excessively yellow or unnaturally vivid color may indicate added colorants or other additives.
Excessive toughness
Authentic fuzhu is relatively brittle and snaps easily when bent. If a stick is unusually elastic after commercial processing, it may be hard to digest and could have reduced nutritional value.
Off-odor
Fuzhu has a shelf life and will spoil if stored too long. If it smells moldy, sour, or otherwise abnormal, do not buy it.
